Eugene Barba’s 90th Anniversary<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eugenio Barba repeatedly pushed the boundaries of theatre and redefined it. But he never abandoned it. He always built bridges, never walls. This was the case in 1974 in Carpignano, a village in southern Italy where he settled with the actors of Odin Teatret after leaving their home in Holstebro. It was there that barter was born \u2013 a unique practice of exchanging experiences and traditions between artists and the local community. And also in 1980, when he founded the International School of Theatre Anthropology, confronting European and Asian stage techniques among researchers and artists. Holstebro was no exception, where for many years he and Odin Teatret organized the Festuge \u2013 a unique festival involving almost all of the town’s residents, regardless of age, gender, profession, or religion. The “Third Theatre” \u2013 a network of socially engaged and ethically sensitive theatre companies, woven by Barba in 1976 and still operating today \u2013 could also be called a bridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With Odin Teatret, Eugenio Barba has been creating theater for over half a century. This is an impressive achievement, especially in the context of Bogdan Korzeniewski’s claim that the lifespan of a theater company is the same as that of a dog\u2014from ten to a dozen years. The secret to Barba’s long-standing work in the theater is love. As he himself says, “I create theater to hug people. Of course, I can’t do it in person. I’d like to hug each of my audience members, but I do it through my actors” (“Teatr w\u00f3jno\u015bci,” interview with Zofia Dworakowska, “Raptularz” 2025). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eugenio Barba and Odin Teatret are returning to the Grotowski Institute after a ten-year hiatus. In 2016, the Theatre Olympics “The World as a Place of Truth” featured performances of “The Tree,” workshops for actors, and a seminar for directors. In 2026, we will focus on the celebrant. We want to look back, present the beginning of Eugenio Barba’s artistic journey, examine its continuation, and finally, ask about his plans for the future. We will present the documentary “Art of the Impossible: The Long Journey of Eugenio Barba and Odin Teatret,”<\/strong> by Elsa Kvamme, about the then-previous director’s work alongside Jerzy Grotowski at the Theatre of 13 Rows in Opole, the founding of Odin Teatret in Oslo, and the years spent in Holstebro, reputedly the “most boring” town in Denmark in the 1960s. We will recall the artist’s many friendships and journeys in “Memory Room<\/strong> ,” a VR experience curated by Dina Abu Hamdan. This will be a virtual visit to the former director’s room at the Nordiskteaterlaboratorium in Holstebro. The essence of Odin Teatret’s work is the practice of theatre, so at Studio Na Grobli we will be showing Barba’s latest production, “Hamlet’s Clouds<\/strong> .” This will be another dialogue between the artist and Shakespeare, following “Ur-Hamlet.” The performance features three generations of Odin Teatret actors: Else Marie Laukvik and Urlik Skeel, who have been associated with the company since the 1960s; Julia Varley and Rina Skeel, actresses who joined in the 1970s and 1980s; and the youngest collaborators in terms of experience and age, Antonia Cezara Cioaz\u0103 and Jakob Nielsen. The main event of the anniversary will be a meeting with Eugenio Barba, provocatively titled “The End of Theatre,”<\/strong> inaugurating a series of talks by distinguished theatre artists representing various generations. Referring to Jerzy Grotowski’s famous statement, delivered at New York University in 1970: “Some words are dead […]. Such words include: spectacle, performance, theatre, spectator, etc.,” we want to explore the state of theatre and its responsibilities in the face of the challenges posed by the contemporary world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under the slogan “Bridges, not walls,” Eugenio Barba is celebrating his 90th birthday around the world. Besides Poland, he will visit Mexico, Italy, Romania, Turkey, Tunisia, Belgium, Greece, France, and Brazil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
