(Remembering Thebes)

Eros, the divinity of antiquity, had many natures, in addition to that of passion: friendship and tenderness, affection and solidarity, sympathy and admiration.

Remembering Thebes, Odin Teatret’s work in progress with Julia Varley and directed by Eugenio Barba, presents three situations of Eros in the form of compassion n. It is a triptych, three grotesque, painful and emblematic stories that come from the contemporary everyday life and from the darkness of myth.

First episode: a Yazid monk plants a tree in the desert to make the birds return. The tree grows but dead.

Second episode: a Chechen refugee’s love for her husband who died at war.

Third episode: Tiresias, blind and seer, recalls the fate of Oedipus and his daughter Antigone.
