In 1596, Hamnet, the only son of William Shakespeare, dies at the age of eleven. Five years later Shakespeare loses his father and during the period of mourning writes The Tragic Story of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark. In the irregular spelling of the time, “Hamnet” and “Hamlet” are practically interchangeable. Many scholars have written long books on the relationship between Hamnet and Hamlet.
The play tells of the Danish King Hamlet, who bears the same name as his son, poisoned by his brother Claudius and his wife Gertrude who are lovers. Their passion is intertwined with another tragic love story between Prince Hamlet and the young Ophelia.
The ghost of Hamlet’s father appears to his son, giving him the task of killing and avenging him. What does this story tell us today? What inheritance have we received from our fathers that we will pass on to our children?

I 1596 dør Hamnet, William Shakespeares eneste søn, 11 år gammel. Fem år senere mister Shakespeare sin far og skriver under sørgeperioden Den tragiske historie om Hamlet, Prins af Danmark. I tidens uregelmæssige retskrivning er “Hamnet” og “Hamlet” praktisk talt det samme. Mange lærde har skrevet tykke bøger om forholdet mellem Hamnet og Hamlet.
Stykket handler om den danske konge, Hamlet, der hedder det samme som sin søn. Kongen er blevet forgivet af sin bror, Claudius, og af sin kone, Gertrud, som er elskende. Deres lidenskabelige kærlighed fletter sig sammen med en anden tragisk kærlighedshistorie mellem Prins Hamlet og den unge Ophelia.
Hamlets fars genfærd viser sig for sin søn og giver ham til opgave at dræbe og hævne sig. Hvad fortæller historien os i dag? Hvilken arv har vi fået af vores fædre, som vi vil give videre til vores børn?

Nel 1596, Hamnet, l’unico figlio maschio di William Shakespeare, muore all’età di undici anni. Cinque anni più tardi Shakespeare perde suo padre e durante il periodo di lutto scrive La tragica storia di Amleto, principe di Danimarca. Nell’ortografia irregolare dell’epoca “Hamnet” e “Hamlet” erano praticamente intercambiabili. Molti studiosi hanno scritto lunghi libri sulla relazione tra Hamnet e Hamlet.
Il testo racconta del re danese Amleto, che porta lo stesso nome del figlio, avvelenato dal fratello Claudio e dalla moglie Gertrude che sono amanti. La loro passione si intreccia con un’altra tragica storia d’amore tra il principe Amleto e la giovane Ofelia.
Cosa dice oggi a noi la vicenda di un padre il cui fantasma appare al figlio e gli lascia in eredità il compito di uccidere per vendicarlo? Qual è l’eredità che abbiamo ricevuto dai nostri padri e che trasmetteremo ai nostri figli?
