In ancient Greek, “Metis” was the name of the goddess of wisdom and cunning. In common language “metis” is used to refer to people born to parents of different ethnicities or with a different phenotype, or to designate cultural mixing. The METIS WINTER SCHOOL, a collaboration of the University of Roma 3 and Fondazione Barba Varley, aims to develop new relationships between theory and practice, the academia and the theatre through intensive courses where teachers and students share other types of transmission between generations and knowledge.
Eugenio Barba’s activity has ranged in multiple directions: from the artistic creation of performances to theoretical reflection, from the transmission of experience to the preservation of historical memory, from the scientific study of the actor’s technique to theatre “outside the theatre” to activate relationships between different cultures and ethnic groups.
Julia Varley, historic member of the Odin Teatret, is an actress, director, pedagogue and essayist, co-founder of the Magdalena Project (network of women in contemporary theatre) and of the journals “The Open Page” and “JTA, Journal of Theatre Anthropology” of which she is an editor.
The relationship of study and scientific and artistic collaboration with our University of Roma 3, culminating in the cycle of lessons held by Barba as visiting professor in May 2022, continues with the WINTER SCHOOL METIS.
This year’s session will have the theme of improvisation as it has developed throughout the history of theatre and will include practical examples and various starting points and procedures. The lessons will be held by Eugenio Barba and Julia Varley together with I Wayan Bawa, Balinese performer of Topeng (mask dance-theatre) and member of ISTA, International School of Theatre Anthropology. Among the scholars there will be Paolo Mottana, University of Bicocca- Milano and Franco Ruffini.
The activity will take place over three days (3-5 March 2024) at the Teatro Potlach in Fara Sabina which will host the students free of charge, providing their accommodation during the Winter School.
